Giving evidence in The Scottish Parliament

It’s a privilege to be able to contribute to the political discourse around the creation of safe and sustainable built environment, so it was great this week to see our colleague Kate Swinburne in The Scottish Parliament, attending the committee meeting for Local Government, Housing and Planning Committee. Kate was giving evidence on the proposed Housing (Cladding Remediation) (Scotland) Bill.
At the event Kate – who is a Chartered Engineer with the Institution of Fire Engineers and an Associate Director based in our Edinburgh office – joined discussions on competence, the single building assessment process and the applicability of PAS 9980 in Scotland. The conversation also considered whether the proposed Bill should be limited to considering cladding or if it should be extended to consider a wider range of fire safety issues.
Kate was invited following OFR’s response to a consultation on this proposed legislation. She joined leading industry voices including representatives from Local Authority Building Standards Scotland (LABSS), Jim McGonigal who is President of the Scottish Branch of the Institution of Fire Engineers and Gary Strong, Head of Professional Practice, Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
