Around the world in 80 ways: Nigeria, Africa
We are proud to serve clients all over the world, with projects spanning a range of countries and architectural types. In this new series, our colleagues will take you on a tour of the world, showcasing some of our work – starting here in Nigeria, where our colleague Ryan McCreadie gives us a brief tour…
A varied portfolio like ours does keep work very interesting, and it’s fascinating to see how different countries approach fire engineering and building safety. It’s our role though to apply our expertise in line with each nation’s rules, helping protect people, place and planet.
Many of our recent projects have been completed in Africa, with four notable projects in Nigeria.
Office of National Security Advisor Headquarters (ONSA HQ) in Abuja, Nigeria:
OFR was appointed by international construction engineering business Julius Berger International GmbH to take on this project, delivering a detailed fire strategy for the creation of a new, five-storey building.
This new structure now comprises offices and meeting rooms, a large conference hall, a restaurant and a carpark in the basement. The conference hall, foyer and restaurant are one storey units, while the office unit extends from the ground level to a third floor.
Bonny Consulate in Bonny Island, Nigeria:

Appointed by Primetech Design and Engineering Nigeria Ltd in 2019, OFR provided a concept fire safety strategy for the reconstruction of this 197-year old building on Bonny Island in the south of the country.
The restored Bonny Consulate Building completed in 2022, with a new four-storey development comprising a museum and cinema on the ground floor; offices, a library and meeting room on the first floor along with offices on the second and third floors.
Port Harcourt Event Plaza (PEP) in Port Harcourt, Nigeria:
A second project with Primetech Design and Engineering Nigeria Ltd. & Julius Berger Nigeria PLC saw OFR provide a detailed fire strategy for the proposed development – a six storey building which consists of a large event hall and main kitchen located on ground level, with offices, meeting and conference rooms on the first floor.
The second floor consists of a kids play area including a food court area. Cinema halls, ticket offices and food court area are located on the third and fourth floor with a restaurant, sports bar, gym, spa and open sky garden on fifth floor.
Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Towers (NNPC Towers) in Abuja:
Appointed again by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC, OFR has been appointed to carry out a review of the proposed new façade for the existing Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Towers (NNPC Towers) in Abuja.
The scope of works includes required cavity barriers and fire stopping; the team will also undertake a review of the existing fire safety provisions within the existing building which were carried out during site inspections and also provide a detailed fire strategy report for the scheme.
